Why UK Dairy Expo has become such an important event for the dairy industry’s future

From elite genetics and global audiences to innovation, UK Dairy Expo has become one of the most influential events in the UK’s dairy industry calendar. It brings together the very best livestock, breeders and industry professionals from across the country and beyond and since its inception 14 years ago, it has grown into an important showcase for shaping the future of the British dairy industry. For event organiser Laura Millar, Director of Harrison & Hetherington, its importance is both professional and deeply personal.

Her connection to the dairy sector begins at home. Her husband, Donald, together with his family, milks 300 head of pedigree Holsteins, alongside a small number of Jerseys, twice daily on the family farm near Lockerbie in Dumfries & Galloway. The herd currently averages 13,200kg, with 4.2% fat and 3.3% protein, and ranks in the top 1% of UK dairy herds for PLI. “We breed for maximum fat and protein, lifespan and PLI,” Laura explains. Alongside the family enterprise, Laura and Donald run their own prefix, Treasure, producing and selling elite Holstein and Jersey embryo calves aimed at the show market. This hands-on involvement gives Laura a clear understanding of the important role events such as UK Dairy Expo play in supporting breeders and in future proofing the industry.

Working alongside Dairy Sales Manager Glyn Lucas, Laura has been directly involved with this H&H event for nine years and together they have been instrumental in seeing its evolution to what it is today, the UK’s largest dairy livestock show and one of the most prestigious showcases for British dairy genetics. “UK Dairy Expo attracts the very best British dairy livestock,” she says. “The crème de la crème from Devon to Aberdeen descend on Borderway to battle it out in the ‘ring of dreams’. As the largest show of dairy livestock in the UK, the level of competition sets it apart, and the accolades won are recognised across the globe.”

Dairy Expo was established in 2013 when Harrison & Hetherington recognised the need for a dedicated platform where all sectors of the dairy industry could be showcased.  With many winners going on to achieve notable success in the parlour, the show ring, and the sale ring, since its inception it has grown into one of the industry’s most important events. “Dairy Expo just gets better and better every year, and it is a real privilege to be so closely involved and so well supported by such an excellent team,” Laura adds.

Beyond the prestige of competition, Dairy Expo plays a significant role in shaping the future of breeding programmes. Success in the show ring can have a lasting impact on herd development and commercial opportunities. “It’s hugely important,” Laura says. “It acts as a shop window for potential customers.” For breeders, the exposure gained through the show here in Carlisle can enhance the reputation and value of their genetics, supporting long-term herd improvement and business growth.

The influence of Dairy Expo now extends far beyond the UK. The introduction of livestreaming has transformed its reach, attracting a truly international audience. “Our livestream has been a game changer,” Laura explains. “We can actively see a global audience tuning in from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Spain, and the Middle East.” This international visibility further strengthens the show’s position as a global stage for British dairy genetics.

Judge selection is another key factor contributing to the event’s reputation and appeal. Judges are selected by Glyn Lucas, and their appointment can influence exhibitors’ decisions about where to showcase their animals. “As with all competitions, the person in the middle of the ring will influence the exhibitors’ decision of what and where to show,” Laura notes.

While the dairy industry continues to face a range of economic and environmental challenges, Laura remains confident that the event’s importance and popularity will endure. “The agri industry as a whole is very resilient,” she says. “Coming together at shows such as this helps strengthen that resilience and allows people to share the ups and downs alike.”

Alongside the livestock classes, the extensive trade show forms a key part of the experience for visitors, providing an opportunity to expand knowledge, explore emerging trends and engage directly with manufacturers, suppliers and technical experts. “Visitors want to develop their knowledge, learn about new industry innovations, and speak directly with the sales teams.” Laura explains.

Among the many highlights of the event, Laura points to showmanship as a particular standout. “It is a fantastic showcase of stockmanship, determination, education and sportsmanship,” she says, highlighting the skill and dedication demonstrated by exhibitors. All traits that learnt correctly can be applied to any aspect of life.

For Laura Millar and the team at Harrison & Hetherington, UK Dairy Expo is an event which represents the strength and future of dairy farming.
